Description
This artwork features fabric from a full traditional Japanese kimono and obi sash. Inspired by the saying, "A crane lives a thousand years, a tortoise lives ten thousand years," it symbolizes longevity. The artist creates a dialogue between the right and left sides, using a fabric with the character for "longevity" on the right and a crane on the left—expressing a wish for long life through both symbol and script. The frame is crafted from paulownia wood, traditionally used for kiritansu (kimono chests). Embracing the concept of kintsugi, the piece reunites fragments of antique kimono with silver and gold leaf, giving them new life as art.
