Aleem Dad Khan

Aleem Dad Khan is a multidisciplinary visual artist and educator hailing from Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan. His work fuses traditional artistic methods with contemporary issues such as environmental change, cultural heritage, and identity. A graduate of the National College of Arts and Beaconhouse National University—and a former UNESCO-UMISARC scholar—Aleem has showcased his work in exhibitions across Pakistan, China, the UK, Europe, and the United States. His artistic practice spans painting, installation, and printmaking, with an emphasis on non-toxic techniques and socially engaged art. As an educator, Aleem has mentored thousands of students at some of Pakistan’s top art institutions. Through his studio and collaborative projects, he continues to empower young artists to use art as a medium for dialogue, cultural exploration, and meaningful change.

    With more than 25 years of experience, Aleem's artistic practice delves into the interplay between culture, climate, and identity through painting, installation, and experimental printmaking methods. He has exhibited and curated work on an international scale and has played a pivotal role in shaping creative education in Pakistan. His work is rooted in the landscapes and traditions of Northern Pakistan, while also reflecting a broader commitment to ecological awareness and cultural dialogue on a global stage.

  • Exhibitions & Participations

    Aleem Dad Khan has an extensive exhibition record spanning over two decades, showcasing his work both nationally and internationally. In 2021, he participated in the UNESCO Art Camp “Colours of Planet” in Andorra, promoting peace diplomacy through art. Notable exhibitions in 2018 include the Jubilee Arts Global Diamond Jubilee Initiative at Lok Virsa, the 9th National Art Exhibition at PNCA, and the CPEC Cultural Caravan Travelling Show across Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. From 2017 to 2018, his work was featured in the travelling group exhibition Fuse and Protogenesis across various cities in China, including Suzhou, Shandong, and Sichuan. In 2016, he exhibited in Open Field – Contemporary Art from Pakistan at PNCA. His 2015 solo thesis show Melting Ice was held at Beaconhouse National University, alongside participation in 25 Years of Swansea Print Workshop in South Wales, We All Are Mad Here at PNCA Islamabad, and Size and Scale Doesn’t Matter at Gallery of Light in Dubai. His solo show Ascending Descend was presented at Gallery 39K, Lahore, in 2014. Earlier group exhibitions include Merging Imaginations – Hungarian and Pakistani Artists Show and a two-person printmaking show at Nomad Gallery in 2013, The Travelling Egg at Rohtas Gallery in 2012, and 100 Words – From Breakfast to Dreaming at Vogue Art Gallery in 2011. His international presence was marked in 2010 with Postcards in the Time of War at Twelve Gates Gallery in Philadelphia and Beyond Frames at PNCA. In 2009, he participated in Tales of the City at NCA Rawalpindi. His earlier works were exhibited in 2008 in his solo show Eye Light at Khaas Gallery and in group shows at Jharoka Gallery and NCA Rawalpindi’s Faculty Show.

    Aleem Dad Khan’s achievements reflect his enduring contributions to art and education on both national and international platforms. In 2022, he served as a judge and jury member for an art exhibition organized by Care International in Islamabad. In 2021, he represented Pakistan at the UNESCO Art Camp “Colours of Planet” in Ordino, Andorra, promoting peace diplomacy through art. He was awarded the prestigious, fully funded UNESCO-UMISARC scholarship for 2014–2015 to pursue an MA in Art and Design Studies at Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, where he graduated with First Division and Dean's Honors. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the National College of Arts (1999–2002), majoring in Painting (Installation) and minoring in Computer Graphics, along with studies in visual arts, design, and sculpture—also completed with First Division and Dean's Honors. His commitment to cross-cultural exchange was evident early on through artist residencies at Swansea Print Workshop, UK, in 2005 and 2006, including participation in the Festival of Muslim Cultures. His artistic foundation was first nurtured in 1998 when he attended a certified art and design workshop by NCA during their summer camp in Hunza, organized by the Aga Khan Cultural Service.
