Awad Mohammed Amayri: Form, Memory, and a Life in Art
Some artists arrive at their practice through a single defining influence. Awad Mohammed Amayri arrived through several: a Palestinian heritage rooted in the village of Al-Ja'una in the Safad district, a childhood and education in Syria, decades of professional life in the United Arab Emirates, and a formal training in visual communication that has shaped everything he has made since.
Born in Syria in 1960, Awad graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University in 1990, specialising in Visual Communication. That foundation is visible in his work. His paintings carry a clarity of composition and a graphic confidence that sets them apart, a sense that every element on the canvas has been placed with intention.
He works primarily with ink and acrylic, mediums that reward both precision and instinct. His earlier career in editorial design, poster design, and large-scale mural execution is not separate from his studio practice; it informs it. The experience of working at scale, and of designing for impact, has left a permanent mark on how he approaches a canvas.
His career has taken him across professional arts organisations on three fronts: the General Union of Palestinian Fine Artists, which he joined in 1985; the Syrian Fine Artists Union, joined in 1991; and the Emirates Fine Arts Society, of which he has been a member since 2002. That sustained institutional engagement across different countries and contexts speaks to a practice that has remained serious and connected throughout.
Between 2021 and 2023, Awad founded and ran Fan wa Fikra for Arts, a fine arts consultancy based in Kalba, Sharjah, extending his engagement with the arts beyond his own studio. He has exhibited widely in group shows locally and internationally, including the 20th Annual Exhibition of the Emirates Fine Arts Society and exhibitions organised by Palestinian and Syrian fine artists' associations.
His work carries the weight of a life lived across borders, shaped by displacement, discipline, and a deep grounding in the visual arts. It does not demand explanation. It holds its ground quietly, and that is precisely where its strength lies.
