Jimmy Mathew

There is something immediately recognisable about Jimmy Mathew's work, even before you know anything about the man behind it. The colours pull you in first. Then the composition settles, and you realise the painting is not asking you to look at it so much as asking you to feel something.
Jimmy is a self-taught Indian visual artist based in Dubai, working across acrylic, oil, and charcoal. Over a score of years of practice, more than 100 projects across India, and a collaboration at the inaugural Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2012 form the backbone of a career built quietly but with real conviction. His work has been covered by The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Times of India, and Malayala Manorama, among others.
He did not train formally. What he built instead is an instinct sharpened by experience.
His process begins with a mood, a colour palette, or an inner feeling. He works intuitively, letting each painting develop through layering and movement rather than a fixed plan. Colour, for him, functions as a language: one that carries emotional states and atmosphere that words rarely manage. Looking at his paintings, this becomes evident. The bold reds and blues carry real weight. The densely textured golden tree has a stillness that feels earned. The deep botanical greens sit somewhere between careful observation and imagination.
What is striking across the portfolio is the range. A skeletal figure rendered in luminous blue sits in the same body of work as dense botanical greens, loose gestural abstraction, and a golden tree built almost entirely from texture. These are not the outputs of an artist searching for a direction. They are the outputs of someone who has genuinely mastered several. The charcoal sensibility that underpins his draughtsmanship shows even in his most colour-saturated canvases, giving them a structural confidence that pure intuition alone rarely produces.
His paintings do not announce themselves. They settle. And the longer you spend with them, the more they give back.
