- Mediya Al Matroshy is an Emirati contemporary artist born in London and she paints music. As someone with synesthesia, (a condition characterised by the blending of multiple senses) Mediya sees the notes of music that she hears. Mediya describes every song that she paints as a communication between her & God, and thus in her abstract works, music is not merely a muse, rather she evokes rhythms & notes on the canvas, making her connection to music a deeply central & spiritual part of her work. The melody of the songs that Mediya listens to is translated into colors, shapes, and textures, and the energy that music evokes becomes brushstrokes on the canvas. “It is that connection that I seek with something much bigger than me (the Divine), which I’m striving to connect to primarily,” she writes, adding that, “the song is the mediator between me and the Divine & the painting becomes the intuitive expression of that which I see and feel, from music to color. Each art piece is a song, and that is how they are titled,” Mediya explains.
Exhibitions
Mediya has showcased her artistic talents in numerous esteemed exhibitions. At M.A.D.S. Art Gallery, she participated in the ADRENOCROMO International Art Exhibition, as well as the BRAIN CAKE International Art Exhibition. She also exhibited her work at Grove Village UAE during the Grove Village Art Week. Additionally, Mediya's art was featured in the Meet The Sun Art Exhibition at Diarbid at The Warehouse in Dubai. In New York, USA, she took part in the Interconnecting Line Exhibition at Artio Gallery at One Art Space Gallery.
