- Viktoriia Smoliar, known professionally as Viki Smoliar, is a Ukrainian artist born in Odessa in 1968, now based in Austria. Raised in a family of filmmakers, she developed an early sensitivity to visual imagery, light, and color, which she carried into a self-directed painting practice built through close study of master painters and sustained experimentation with technique and material.
Short Biography
Viki Smoliar grew up in the port city of Odessa, surrounded by the creative environment of a filmmaking family. She learned painting largely through her own study of established masters and continuous practice, working through different materials and approaches to color and form before arriving at a personal style. Her painting practice has run in parallel with periods of significant personal upheaval, and she describes the act of rebuilding her work layer by layer as closely connected to her own process of recovery and self-understanding. In 2024, her work was presented at the Venice International Art Fair, 20th edition, held at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice, Italy.
