On many mornings, entering the workshop brings a kind of daze—something that confuses us, though we don’t know why. That was the feeling when this sculpture began to take shape. It felt as though the steel was searching for something different than what I had envisioned. Sometimes, the best way to understand a sculpture is to stop thinking altogether—to simply work. To forge the steel as if climbing a mountain whose peak is hidden in fog. We know the summit is there, even if we can’t see it, and so we keep going, sometimes blindly. It is in the act of creation that the light begins to emerge. Creating the sculpture becomes the very thing that guides us forward.
