Description
Captured off the east coast of South Africa in the quiet seaside village of Umdloti, this image was taken during the heart of winter on a morning most would have written off. Rain poured steadily, the sky heavy with storm clouds, and the sea churned in its usual wild rhythm. But drawn by an instinctive pull toward the water-and a lifelong fascination with cloud structures-I made my way down to the shoreline. Floating just beyond the breakers, camera in hand, I waited. Then, for a brief, unforgettable moment, the sky opened. A break in the storm revealed the sun-low, fierce, and burning through mist like molten copper. The light struck the surface of the ocean with an almost surreal intensity, scattering into a trail of flickering fire that danced toward me. The result is this image: a fleeting alignment of atmosphere, patience, and place. This photograph is a reminder of the beauty that exists just beyond comfort, just outside the expected. It's what happens when you choose not to stay indoors, when you venture out into the unpredictable-and let the elements surprise you
